KCD was formed to promote the physical infrastructure, cultural, social and economic life of Kilmihil parish. KCD has engaged with many organisations and groups over the years to further its aims, including a village renewal scheme partnership with Clare County Council when Main Street was redeveloped years ago.
KCD is the sponsor of a Community Employment Scheme in the parish which has been running for over 20 years. Many of KCD’s aims regarding the physical infrastructure of the parish are achieved through the use of this scheme. It has developed and maintained facilities at Knockalough Lake and worked in co-operation with Clare County Council to enhance many of the approach roads to the village- by rebuilding walls and installing footpaths.
Kilmihil Community Employment Scheme
KCD runs a community employment scheme under the supervision of Michael Lineen, which does tremendous work in our parish.
In past years KCD has created a graveyard register detailing the position of the graves in the old graveyard as well as the development and maintenance of the other graveyards in the parish. It has also created a map of the old graveyard with markings in the graveyard to allow interested individuals to locate graves.
KCD has erected townland signs at the boundaries of townlands and has engaged in the process of developing places of historical interest in the parish – such as the Fairgreen and the mass rock in Clonigulane. In 2017 it repaired the civil war bunker located in Greygrove. This has been a focus of much interest locally.
KCD Playschool
With the closing of West Clare Early Years service the parish lost its pre-school for a number of weeks. Kilmihil Community Development, as a company limited by guarantee, was in a position to step in and ensure that this valuable community service continues to be available in the parish. It presently employs three people and provides pre–school education to more than 20 children on a weekly basis.
